When we learned that Drew Barrymore was going to be making an appearance at the Barnes and Noble Hollywood store to promote her new book Wildflower, we immediately began making plans to attend! We were so lucky to have been contacted by Chris Miller the day before asking if we were going to be there. When we confirmed that we were, he began working on getting us reserved seating for the event!

We arrived at the store prior to the event and confirmed that we were in fact on “Drew’s List”, along with our two longtime Drewbie pals Joalena and Brian. Before Drew’s arrival, we were escorted to the front row of the small section of chairs that was set up for her appearance. Seated next to us were former Flower staffer Kelly Smith and photographer David Khinda. It was rather surreal to be sitting right alongside some of Drew’s personal friends!

Suddenly an annoucement was made to “welcome Drew Barrymore!” and we saw her coming up to the stage, accompanied by Chris and Mason Hughes. She looked beautiful. She spent the first few minutes posing for a mob of press photographers with her book while cracking jokes and laughing at their silly requests. For the conversation, AM radio host Gary Hoffmann was on hand as host and to present the questions for the Q&A portion. Drew had the audience enamored and in constant laughter as she spoke about some of the anecdotes in the book, including a hilarious rendition of the “jumping ship” chapter. Afterward, the book signing began. As the line was stretched all throughout the store, attendees were guided through very quickly by security. We sat observing in the front row as she speedily signed books, as friendly as possible to everyone who was there.

In a strange coincidence, one young lady told Drew that she currently lives in Drew’s former West Hollywood duplex, which she wrote about in the first chapter of the book. The lady even produced her driver’s license to show Drew the address! She was laughing about it and then heard us reacting as well, finally noticing us. She enthusiastically said hi to us and continued chatting a bit as she signed books. She wanted to make sure we had noticed that she had given us a credit on Instagram the week before and thought it was great that it made our follower count jump up dramatically!

Finally, Drew had worked her way through the entire line and the only people left were her, Chris, and Mason, plus us along with the other “Drew’s List” guests! She gave each of us big hugs and was so appreciative of us being there. We introduced her to Brian and told her that we had all met online in 1999. She laughed and said that was probably the last time it was safe to meet people that way. We all talked about a few different things, including Ashley’s daughter calling Ever After “Cinderella Superhero” when she couldn’t recall the actual title. Drew thought it was a fitting title and joked about trademarking it. We discussed how emotional the Flossy chapter was to read and she said she was sobbing on the keyboard as she wrote it.

She noticed Ashley’s Lily FLOWER Beauty sunglasses and we showed her the FLOWER manicures we had gotten earlier that day. She masterfully identified both shades of polish in seconds (Astor Place and Berry Begonia!). We then presented her with the small gifts we had brought. First, there was a heart shaped stone made from mookaite jade that was said to help heal family issues. We also included a symbolic East of India tape measure for its so-very-Drew sentiment: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.” After she read it, she pointed to her “breathe” tattoo and nodded.

We realized that we all still needed to get our books signed! Chris had pulled copies off the Barnes and Noble wall display and gifted them to us, which we found hilarious. Drew spent time on each inscription, signing Anne’s “You’re the best, lots of love” and Ashley’s “Love you so”. Because we had never previously had her make anything out to The Drewseum, we asked if she would mine signing a postcard bearing her famous Herb Ritts profile portrait from 1993. She was more than happy to oblige and spent quite a bit of time writing it out. We were beside ourselves when we read her heartfelt message: “To The Drewseum, my friends. All my love, your girl, D.” What a dream!

Mason asked us if we would like him to take some photos of us all together, which was a huge bonus to an already perfect night. After that, we said our goodbyes and got another round of hugs from Drew. We walked away pinching ourselves just thinking that 15 years ago, we wouldn’t have imagined the four of us getting to hang out, let alone with the woman who truly brought us all together!
